Abandoned Water Wells

Abandoned water wells are those that are no longer being used, and are not intended to be used as a water supply. When not properly plugged off, abandoned water wells can pose a significant threat to groundwater.

The County's Abandoned Water Wells Program is providing information to well owners about how to properly plug their abandoned wells. In addition, there are often funding programs available to assist landowners to properly plug their abandoned water wells. County staff are available to assist interested well owners in accessing those funds.

For information on plugging abandoned water wells, please contact the County's Agricultural Assistant or Conservation Coordinator. Or, search the internet for 'Alberta Water Well Plugging'.
