General Statistics
*With a population of 18,639, Red Deer County covers an area of 4,042 square kilometers. (1,575 square miles, 1,007,968.8 acres/407,925 hectares) Within the north central boundary of Red Deer County is the City of Red Deer with a population of over 71,000 people.
*In the late 1990s, the Federal Census indicated that for the first time in sixty years, the rural population of Alberta outpaced the urban growth. The overall population of Red Deer County is greater than 112,000 including the City of Red Deer and the County's towns and villages.
*Red Deer County includes 60 residential subdivisions, eight industrial/commercial subdivisions, four towns, two villages, two summer villages and seven hamlets within the County's boundaries.
*Neighboring municipalities of Red Deer County are Clearwater County to the West, Lacombe County to the North, the County of Stettler to the East, and to the South are the Counties of Kneehill and Mountain View.
*Red Deer County is located approximately mid-way between both Edmonton and Calgary and is located along Alberta Highway #2 (north/south).
*The area draws employees from within a 45-minute drive radius. This drive radius is equivalent to Statistics Canada Census Division 8. Division 8 has a population of over 160,000 people and has created over 22,000 jobs in the past decade constituting a 33% growth rate. The active labour force within this radius is 93,100 - equivalent to a 74.5% participation rate.
*Alberta has the highest worker productivity and productivity growth rate in Canada.
*Over the past ten years, Alberta's person-days lost to labour disputes ranked among the lowest in Canada. In 2001, the number of person-days lost to labour disputes averaged 2.5 days per 10,000 worked, relative to the Canadian average of 6.7 days.
*Almost 35% of the Region's employed population holds technical diplomas or certificates - approximately 10% higher than the national average. An additional 15% have some level of post-secondary training. This provides a highly skilled population of professional trades for manufacturing, construction, petrochemical and high-tech industries.
*Red Deer College is one of the driving factors behind the educated workforce. It offers a diverse array of programs: applied degree; degree completion; university transfer; certificate and diploma; academic upgrading; trades & industrial training; distance learning; international opportunities and extension & part-time learning. The College also provides industry specific training to meet specialized skill requirements.
