GIS

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is a computerized method of organizing, manipulating, analyzing and mapping spatial geographic data. Red Deer County utilizes this technology to manage all data linked to a location. Questions can then be answered visually by a geographical location. An average GIS contains; computer hardware and software, spatial geographic data and a technical staff for analysis. Red Deer County uses GIS for the following applications:

  • Operations / Public Works, Roads, Utilities, Bridges, Signs, Traffic Counts, Drainage, Waste Management
  • Emergency Management - Police Fire and Ambulance, Disaster Management, Emergency Preparedness
  • Planning and Development, Zoning, Area Structure Plans, Development
  • Corporate Services, Land Ownership Mapping, Addressing, Census

Red Deer County also combines GPS (Global Positioning Systems) technology with their GIS as a method of collecting data and tracking information. A GPS program called CAMS (Central Asset Management System) is used by the County in all Graders, Snowplows, Peace Officers, Spray and Field Trucks. This program gives County staff the ability to better manage its mobile assets.

Rural Addressing

The objective of Rural Addressing System in Red Deer County is to provide an address for every developed parcel in the county. In the time of an emergency, your rural address will help emergency responders; such as fire, police or ambulance find your home quickly.

A rural address is much more accurate than a legal land location as it will pinpoint the access to your home off of a range road or township road. By knowing and posting your rural address, you will aid emergency responders in finding your home. In any emergency situation, a fast response time could mean the difference between life and death.
