Public Ag Literacy Project: Summer 2019 Update

Thanks to funding from the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, we have a new Public Ag Literacy (PAL) Project in Red Deer County.

Our goal with this project is to help create more opportunities for the residents of the City of Red Deer to build relationships with their farmer and rancher neighbours, in the County. Through the relationships built, we believe perceptions about agriculture can change.

There are 3 phases for this project:

1. Establishing a Project Advisory CommitteeStatus: Complete

A committee made up of City residents and county farmers and ranchers, they advise us on what tools/ events that will be used to help meet our project goal. We had a great response, with more than 30 applicants for this committee

2. Research & ExplorationStatus: In Progress

We are consulting with Ag Industry representatives to make sure our messages align. Soon, we will be consulting members of our Target Audience in the City of Red Deer, to help determine which tools and events can be used to engage them in the project.

3. Development and testingStatus: To come, starting in late 2019 / early 2020

In this phase, we’ll be creating tools, activities and events and putting them into action. We’ll learn what works and doesn’t work, and evolve things as needed to meet our project goal.

Getting our Project Advisory Committee together was rather exciting. It was rewarding to meet so many people interested and eager to join us in this project.

All the applicants were passionate about the topic at hand. I recall one farmer applicant saying, “It’s important and show the city folks that we’re the same as them, and that it’s not just about the goods being produced but it’s more so about what farming really means”.

Now that our Project Advisory Committee has been established, we look forward to launching the consultation phase and putting the ideas into action. We’ll keep you updated on the progress along the way, through regular County News articles and other means.
